Banks Announce (or Let it Slip) That Apple Pay has Come to Germany

Apple Pay

Two of Germany’s major banks,  HVB and Bunq, have both announced via their sites and emails to customers that Apple Pay has made it to the country.  While HVB’s site suggests it is live, Bunq still says it is “coming soon”.  For their part, Apple has not made an official announcement but the German Apple site has been updated with Pay information, along with supporting banks.

The news falls in line with previous comments from Apple CEO Tim Cook.  In July he stated that the tap-to-pay service would be coming to Deutschland before the end of 2018.  Looks like that is going to happen with nearly two months to spare.

Apple Pay Now Accepted at CVS Pharmacy

Apple Pay Tap to Pay

After being announced as a “coming soon” by Tim Cook in Apple’s July investor’s call, CVS Pharmacy is now accepting Apple Pay at pay terminals in their stores.  The news comes just a little over a month after 7-Eleven announced they too were accepting the tap-to-pay service from Apple.

The news is particularly exciting for Apple because CVS Pharmacy marks the another of the early CurrentC adopters to move away from it to Apple Pay.  For those that don’t recall, CurrentC was developed in 2014 by MCX.  It was based on a consortium of many larger retailers including Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Dunkin Donuts, Gap, CVS, 7-Eleven, and Rite Aid.  The service was plagued with delays and had a substantial hack against it before shutting down in 2016.    It was aimed to go head-to-head against Apple Pay.
