iOS 12 Ninth Public Beta Released to Registered Testers

iPhone 7 Lock Screen

For those of you who have an iPhone or iPad registered in the Apple Beta Program, there is a new iOS 12 build waiting for you.  The ninth public beta was released earlier this morning in conjunction with the 11th developer build of the next version of iOS.  The developer builds, which require a $99 per annum developer account, is two build ahead of the free public beta but is also less stable.  All of these updates come just days after the 10th developer beta was released last week.

As for what is new, there isn’t much to report if you have been keeping up with the beta program.  At this point, with the general release just a couple of weeks away, it is more about fit & finish at this point in the beta cycle.

How to Adjust Your Calorie Goal in Activity on Your Apple Watch

Adjust Your Activity Goal on Apple Watch

One of the great features of the Apple Watch is the Activity app.  It is an app that keeps track of your movement calories, your exercise and the standing you do each hour in one easy-to-use app.  It is the measurement of these activities that allow you to complete the now well known rings each day.

When it comes to calorie targets, it is the one metric that users can adjust.  The standing once per hour and 30 minutes of exercise, at least for now, are fixed and can’t be adjusted.  The calorie one however is probably the more important one anyway.  Depending on your lifestyle and even your profession, you may want to set your calorie burn goal higher than the minimum 300 calories target.  You’ll know this is the case if you are consistently going over your current target by two or three times in a day.  One day is a one-off but consistently blowing through that target means it needs to be adjusted up.

In this How To I’ll show you a quick way that you can adjust your calorie target in the middle of a day or week.  Once you adjust it, it will be your goal going forward until you adjust it again and it will be reflected in your target measurements for the week you are in.

Apple is Currently Giving Free iCloud Users 200GB of Storage for Free for 2 Months

iCloud Free 200GB Offer

In an effort to get everyone ready for the new iPhones, Apple is bumping up the amount of storage given to free tier users of iCloud so they can back up their phones.  The promotion has some strings attached but if you are eyeing getting a new iPhone next month (which could be announced on September 12th according the latest rumors), it’s worth a look-see.

First, the promotion is only open to those who have a free iCloud account, which comes with 5GB of storage.  That isn’t a lot and only Microsoft is at that same level with OneDrive.  Google Drive free users get 15GB of storage.  So, if you are already paying for iCloud storage, you can’t take advantage of this offer.

The Next Apple Event Increasingly Looks Like it Will be September 12th

Apple Logo

While it still remains in the realm of rumors, it is increasingly looking like Wednesday, September 12th will be the next Apple event.  That date falls a week after Labor Day here in the United States (September 3rd) which is a national holiday.

The latest rumor comes from the radio station Europe 1 out of France.  The stated indicated that they had the date confirmed by two unnamed sources.  This lines up with other rumors that have been floating around the past few weeks and, historically, it fits within the normal timeframe for these Apple Events.

Dark Sky for iOS Gets a Major Revamp With a New At-A-Glance View

Dark Sky Forecast Tab

Dark Sky, the popular hyper-local weather app for both Android and iOS, has a new look and feel that has rolled out.  The new, brighter look to the app rolled out to Android users first last month but last week, iOS users started getting the new look too.

The biggest new feature of the update is what is best described as an at-a-glance view.  This is on the forecast tab of the app, which is the where the app launches when you fire it up on your iPhone or iPad.  There you see a radar image, the current weather conditions such as temperature and feel like temperature for your location.  If there is rainfall happening, or expected to happen, you will also see a timeline of when that rain will start and how intense it will be during that time.

Apple Pay Donation Program for US National Parks is Underway

Apple Watch National Parks Activity Badge

Last week, Apple announced a new donation program for the US National Parks through Apple Pay.  That program has now gone live and will be in effect through August 31st.  How it works is pretty simple.  For every purchase made in an Apple Store, be it online or in a physical retail location, the Cupertino company will donate $1 to the National Parks Foundation.

For those that aren’t familiar with the National Parks Foundation, it is the non-profit foundation for all national parks here in the United States and funds many projects and programs like those to help save animal habitats, or to start education programs.
