Long time Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has predicted that in early 2019, an updated version of AirPods will be coming that will include a wireless charging case. The news comes from AppleInsider who saw the report from Kuo over the weekend.
In the prediction, Ming-Chi Kuo indicates that wireless charging will be coming to AirPods. This is likely in the form of a wireless charging case, something Apple indicated was coming with the AirPower charging mat over a year ago. The AirPower charging system has yet to materialize with rumors suggesting that Apple is doing a major reworking of the wireless charger.
As for other updates to AirPods in early 2019, they are likely to get updated to Bluetooth 5.0 for connectivity according to Kuo. It is also possible that the W-series chip in the wireless earbuds, which allow them to effortlessly connect to your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, will also be updated at the same time.
Historically, Ming-Chi Kuo has been deadly accurate on most of his Apple predictions. He was one of the first to predict the Apple wireless earbuds initially although he did miss the prediction that they would be updated late this year. Many expected that we would see an announcement of updated AirPods at either the September or October Apple Events held this year based on his predictions. That, clearly, did not happen.
Ultimately, this is still in the realm of Rumorville until Apple makes an official announcement or, better yet, releases an updated version of the AirPods early next year.
