The new Apple Watch Series 4 has officially been announced by Apple at the Gather Round event. The updated watch, powered by WatchOS 5, brings a larger display to the leading wearable device and brings a new electrocardiogram feature along with other improvements found in the new OS.
Available in both a GPS and a GPS+Cellular variant, the new Series 4 is the first Apple Watch to be 64-bit and all of the models now have a ceramic back. that ceramic back is what allows the new electrocardiogram feature to work. The watch is approved by the FDA, the first of its kind for a smart watch.
The display of the Series 4 is 32% to 35% larger than the Series 3 and with the new ceramic back allow for radio waves to pass through the front and the back which should improve cellular signal for the Cellular models.
Powering all of this is the new S4 SoC which is 2 times faster and it is a full 64-bit processor. Apple also improved the accelerometer and the gyroscope which samples 8 times faster. This allows the Series 4 to detect falls and can now call for emergency assistance either by your interaction with it, or if you have been still for 1 minutes, the watch will call emergency services for you.
There are a wide range of new watch faces that come with the Series 4. There are Fire, Water, and Vapor watch faces that interact with the display. There is also a series of three new watch faces for the built-in Breath app.
As for the new features, there are a lot:
- Haptic feedback on the Digital Crown
- Speaker has been redesigned and is 50% louder than Series 3
- Microphone moved to the opposite of the Series 3 to cut down on echo on calls
- Electrocardiogram functionality
- 18 hour battery life (Same as the Series 3)
The good news is that all of your watch bands will still work with the Series 4 as the connection to those bands has not changed.
The ECG functionality can’t be overrated. The watch is the first over-the-counter ECG device and it is FDA approved. It makes the watch the first FDA approved device sold over the counter that can do an ECG. This is a big deal and is done with the new sensors built into the back of the Series 4.
The new Apple Watch Series 4 will be available to order on September 14th and available to purchase in Apple Stores on September 21st. It will be $399 for the GPS model and $499 for the GPS+Celluarl model. Also, the Series 3 is dropped down to $279.
As for WatchOS, that will be available on September 17th.
