A big new update is coming for Apple Music subscribers who have a Google Home. In the latest update to the Google Home app for iOS, Apple’s music service is listed as an option. You can find it under Profile>Music in the app. Right now the feature is not working. If you tap to link your account, it will indicate you are signed in when in fact you are not.
Apple Music is already available on Amazon Echo devices, which according to the latest report Strategy Analytics, dominates the smart speaker market at 35.5%. If you add Google Home devices to the mix, which has 30% of the smart speaker market, that is a exponential jump in potential customers. Apple’s own HomePod smart speaker has 4.1% of the market. Given that Music already has some 56 million subscribers, it is expected that number will increase once Google Home support comes online.
When this new feature will go live is unclear as the update to the Home app to support it was released just yesterday. Given it is out in the wild however, it shouldn’t be too long. I would expect Apple and Google to make some sort of announcement on it once it finally does go live.
