Apple Updates AirTag Firmware for The Second Time in a Week

Apple has released another firmware update for its AirTag item trackers. The new firmware is version 1.0.291 for those keeping score at home, with a build number of 1A291c. The same version number with the build number 1A291a was released last week. As with the release last week, it is unclear what is new or fixed in this “c” build as Apple notoriously provides little detail on what firmware updates address on AirTag and AirPod products.

AirTag is a small and elegantly designed accessory that helps keep track of and find the items that matter most with Apple’s Find My app. Whether attached to a handbag, keys, backpack, or other items, AirTag taps into the global Find My network and can help locate a lost item, all while keeping location data private and anonymous with end-to-end encryption. When you are looking for a tagged item, you can use the Find My app on your iPhone to get directions to it as well as have it play a sound.

Much like AirPods, there is no way to force an update on an AirTag, which is done OTA (over-the-air). However, you can see what version your trackers are running easily. Go to Find My on your iPhone then to the Items tab. Tap on the name of one of your AirTags to bring up, then tap on the name. There you will see the serial number as well as the version number of your device.

As you can see from my screenshot, my AirTag has not been updated to the latest version – so hopefully soon.
