CIA Claims Huawei Backed by Chinese State Security

For the first time, we now have a glimpse into why the United States government has concerns over Huawei. In a report in The Times, the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) of the United States has shown the British government that the telecom giant has taken money from three different security branches within the Chinese government.

American intelligence shown to Britain says that Huawei has taken money from the People’s Liberation Army, China’s National Security Commission and a third branch of the Chinese state intelligence network, according to a UK source.

The report in The Times also indicates that the CIA has shared its findings with the so-called Five Eyes participating governments. This would include Australia, Canada and New Zealand as well as the UK and the United States.

The U.S. government has long claimed that Huawei poses a security risk but to this point had not shared the reasons why with other governments or publicly. While the public evidence is still not being disclosed, if the U.S. is sharing intelligence with its partner nations, they clearly believe their concerns around legitimate. This is also part of a larger discussion with allies as they try to persuade them to not use Huawei equipment in general but for 5G deployments in particular. Right now the United Kingdom and Germany are both posed to use the Chinese company’s hardware.

Huawei and the United States have been at odds for several years now. Tensions have heightened under President Trump who, along with his administration, has been a vocal opponent of allowing the company to do business in the U.S..
