Earlier this week, we took a look and discussed the default wallpaper for iPhone OS 1 and iPhone OS 2, the older names for what would eventually be rebranded as iOS. Today we take a look at the next default wallpaper that was found in iPhone OS 3 and was shared with iOS 4.
First, let’s take a look at the history of iPhone OS 3 and iOS 4. Version 3 was announced on March 17, 2009 and was released on June 17, 2009 on the iPhone 3GS. The release also marked a trend that Apple continues to this day: Keeping older devices up-to-date with the latest software version. The 3.0 release supported the original iPhone and the first generation iPod touch. Also, historically, the iPhone OS 3 train is important as it was version 3.2 that was introduced along side the very first iPad released by Apple on April 3, 2010. Apple would continue to develop on version 3.x through to version 3.2.2 which was released on August 11, 2010.
With the iPad now in Apple’s product portfolio, iPhone OS became iOS starting with version 4. iOS 4 was announced in March 2010 and was released with the iPhone 4 on June 21, 2010. Apple dropped support for the now three-year-old original iPhone as well as the first generation iPod touch although the iPhone 3G and 2nd generation iPod Touch could run iOS 4 with limited features. With the release of iOS 4.2.1, the original iPad was updated which also marked the final release supported on the iPhone 3G and 2nd generation iPod Touch. The later two being dropped due to performance issues. With the release of iOS 4.3, support for the iPad 2 occured. The final release in the iOS 4 train was iOS 4.3.5 which was released on July 25, 2011.
For both iPhone OS 3 and iOS 4, the default wallpaper was a beautiful gradient image with water droplets at the top. It came along with the release of iOS 4.2.1 and was the default wallpaper for the iPad. The image below of that wallpaper measures 1024 × 1024 which was the resolution of the first and second generation iPads. The image, however, was sized down for iPhones.
