While the focus of the release of WatchOS 5.1.2 yesterday was on the ECG app coming to the Apple Watch Series 4, there were other goodies in the release for everyone. One of those is the Walkie-Talkie availability can now be controlled via Control Center on your Apple Watch.
Previously, if you wanted to change your availability for the instant talking feature, you had to go into the app itself on your Apple Watch and change your availability. It worked but it wasn’t exactly handy. That’s changed with WatchOS 5.1.2.
Now you can simply swipe up on the screen of your Apple Watch to get to Control Center. At the bottom you will see the Walkie-Talkie feature. Tap it to make yourself available (it will light up yellow) or leave it untouched to remain unavailable.
You can, of course, still go into the Walkie-Talkie app itself to change your availability but this is a quicker way to do it.
Walkie-Talkie was a new feature that came with WatchOS. It allows you to instantly talk to a contact (who has authorized you) by tapping and holding the talk button in the app on your Apple Watch. It is a great way for you to communicate with family or friends as you try to find each other at, say, a party or while out at the beach. I personally use it with friends while skiing to find out which lift they are at so I can meet up with them.
