With iOS 12 slated to be released later this morning, a side effect of that will be a very busy App Store over the course of the next few days. With the release of the latest version, app developers big and small will be pushing out updates throughout this week to get their apps using the latest & greatest features of iOS 12. This will be mostly for your iPhone as well as your Apple Watch.
For most developers, this is simply going to be a matter of making sure the latest policies are in place, the latest APIs are being used, and a lot of other under-the-hood improvements that their apps will gain from iOS 12. But for others, it will be about leveraging the new features in the latest version of iOS.
Perhaps the single biggest area where we will see a lot of apps adopt a new feature of iOS 12 is Siri Shortcuts. Several apps have already updated their apps to support the new feature that will allow for you to schedule commands and issue Siri multiple commands with one interaction. This is a big step forward for Siri overall and many developers will want to make sure their app is able to use the feature.
Also keep an eye out for updates to your Apple Watch after WatchOS is released. WatchOS 5 is also slated to be released later this morning at 10:00 am Pacific and it brings a lot of new features and improvements too. Developers may take this opportunity to improve their companion apps on Apple Watch so don’t be surprised if you see a lot of update activity.
Today will be a fun day for sure with iOS 12, WatchOS 5, tvOS 12 all rolling out today. And while most of us will burn office hours updating our devices, be prepared for a flood of updates to your apps this week too.
