A new update to Google Maps is rolling out that allows you to find your nearest Electrical Vehicle (EV) charging station. The update is a cloud-side update so as long as you have the latest version of Google Maps running on your iPhone or Android phone, you will be able to search for “EV Charging Station” or “EV Charging” and find your nearest charging point.
Globally, you will be able to find out where Tesla and ChargePoint EV Charging stations are located. Here in the US, you will also find information for SemaConnect, EVgo and Blink stations.
Interestingly, the Google Maps information on EV Charging Stations shows both public and private charging points. Take, for example, my screenshot below from Vail, Colorado. Several of the charging points listed in Google Maps are private points for hotels and resorts and are not available to the public. This is particularly true of the Tesla charge points.
Contrast this with Apple Maps which also shows EV Charging Stations when you search for them. It only shows those charging stations that are publicly available. Again, looking at the screen capture below, only the charging points available in the public parking garages are listed as being available, not those owned by hotels or resorts.
In any event, it is good to see this being available on both apps for those who have an EV and need to find a charging station to continue your journey.
