iOS 16 Preview – Improved Timer Lock Screen Widget

As I’ve shared in other iOS 16 preview articles, many of the changes coming in the next version of iOS are subtle, tweaking features or apps to make them a little more useful. Another great example of this is the Timer widget that will appear on the Lock Screen when you have a timer running in iOS 16. It is a dramatic improvement over iOS 15, making it far more visible and interactive without having to actually unlock your iPhone.

First, let’s take a look at the Timer… widget? I guess we can call it that, in iOS 15. It wasn’t really a widget but rather just a timer that showed up under the clock on your iPhone. To see this, you would need to go to the Clock app and start a timer. Then, when you locked your iPhone and raised it to see the Lock Screen, you would see it.

in iOS 16, it is completely different. It is an actual, proper widget that allows you to not only see the countdown of your timer but also allows you to stop it and pause it.

Clearly this is far more useful and helpful!

Apple made it clear during WWDC that developers would develop widgets for their apps to show up on the Lock Screen. This example from Apple gives a good glimpse of the “Art of the possible” when it comes to these widgets and I’m hopeful that developers will take advantage of this new area in which to expose their app and useful information or data.

iOS 16 will be available later this year, perhaps as early as September, from Apple. It will for any iPhone 8 or newer.
