iOS 16 Preview – iPhone Compatibility

Each year, when Apple releases a new version of iOS, there is always the question of which iPhone models from the past will be compatible with the new release. iOS 16 is no different. While Apple themselves have published the list of devices on the iOS 16 preview site, honestly it is a bit buried towards the bottom of the page. To save you time, here is a complete list of previous iPhone models that will be compatible with iOS 16.

  • iPhone 13 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13 Pro
  • iPhone 13
  • iPhone 13 mini
  • iPhone SE (2022)
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12 Pro
  • iPhone 12
  • iPhone 12 mini
  • iPhone SE (2020)
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone 11 Pro
  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone X
  • iPhone 8 Plus
  • iPhone 8

To put this in a better perspective, the newest version of iOS will be able to run on a device, the iPhone 8, that was released nearly five years ago. The iPhone 8 made its debut on September 22, 2017.

When Apple announced iOS 16 at WWDC, there was some backlash initially that the iPhone 7 was not support as it had been with iOS 15. I caution readers to remember that the iPhone 7 lineup is now approaching six years old and the fact that Apple still can manage to get the latest software version on five year-old devices is somewhat miraculous. Remember that most Android devices will only get the latest version of that platform for two or three years.

iOS 16 will be available later this year, perhaps as early as September, from Apple. It will for any iPhone 8 or newer.
