iOS 16 Preview – Lock Screen Calendar Privacy

As most readers will know, some of the biggest changes coming to your iPhone in iOS 16 are around the Lock Screen. For the first time, you will be able to customize the look and feel of your Lock Screen and add specific widgets. One of those widgets is for the Calendar app, allowing you to see at a glance your next appointment. But that also comes with some risks, even if your phone is locked. If someone were to pick up your phone, they could see your next appointment. That’s where Calendar privacy on the Lock Screen comes in and is a great addition to iOS 16.

When you have the Calendar widget on your Lock Screen in iOS 16 and your iPhone is locked, the information about your next appointment is hidden. Take a look at the shot below from my iPhone that I’m running the iOS 16 Beta on currently. Note that the calendar event is lined out, hiding it from view.

Now take a look at the widget when I unlock my iPhone with FaceID.

The great thing about this new feature is that it works automatically. There is no configuration needing to be done other than adding the Calendar widget to your Lock Screen. In iOS 15, you could hide your calendar notifications but it was not nearly as seamless or as elegant as the solution provided in iOS 16.

iOS 16 will be available later this year, perhaps as early as September, from Apple. It will for any iPhone 8 or newer.
