After being announced at WWDC last year, Microsoft Office 365 has made its way to the Mac App Store. The announcement came today from Apple and it means that you can now download all six of the suite directly from the App Store and not from Microsoft.
The app downloads themselves are free but without an Office 365 subscriptions, you are pretty limited in functionality. For example, in Word, Excel and PowerPoint, you can only view files and can’t edit them. Editing features come with a full subscription. If you already have a subscription and want to install the apps again, you can do so and just use your account login information to get going. If you do not have an Office 365 subscription, you can sign up for one through an in-app purchase.
“We are excited to welcome Microsoft Office 365 to the all new Mac App Store in macOS Mojave,” said Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “Apple and Microsoft have worked together to bring great Office productivity to Mac users from the very beginning. Now, with Office 365 on the Mac App Store, it’s easier than ever to get the latest and best version of Office 365 for Mac, iPad and iPhone.”
To be clear, if you already have the Microsoft Office apps installed on your Mac, you do not have to download them again. But if you want to make life easy and have one location – the Mac App Store – to download all your apps, then you can go through the process of reinstalling them.
The arrival of Office 365 in the Mac App Store is a big deal as it shows Microsoft’s continued efforts to play nice with Apple. It also makes things easier for customers as, like I mentioned above, they can got one place to get the apps.
