Summary

Having had the opportunity to use the EP-B80 earbuds from AUKEY, I am nothing short of impressed. They are extremely comfortable to wear for extended periods of time, have excellent sound quality, and battery life is great. It is hard to find much wrong with them to be honest and I have no hesitation in recommending them for those of you who are looking for a solid pair of earbuds.

When it comes to mid-range Bluetooth earbuds, the market has plenty of options. One of the newer ones out there is from AUKEY, a company more known for their power supplies and other accessories than audio. But that is changing and rapidly. The company recently announced their new Key Series of wireless earbuds and the first of those, the AUKEY EP-B80, shows that they are serious about audio.

With an over-the-ear hook, the EP-B80 comes with a wide range of changeable earbuds to fit anyone. It has Bluetooth 5.0 support, has Dynamic Driver technology for outstanding audio, 8 hours of battery life, and recharges via a USB-C connector. It also comes with a carrying case and supports rapid charging when you only have a few minutes to recharge the EP-B80s. They are a solid option for those looking for high performance earbuds that are under $100. Recently AUKEY sent me the EP-B80 to review and after having used them for a couple of weeks, I’m nothing short of impressed.

Technical Specifications

The AUKEY EP-B80 Bluetooth earbuds are an over-the-ear hook style headset. When you purchase the B80s, you are provided three silicon ear tips (S/M/L) as well as three foam ear tips (S/M/L) to provide you the comfort you need for wearing them for long periods of time. The behind-the-neck lanyard has a small control box that hangs just below your right ear. This control box provides a multi-function button, volume up and volume down keys, as well as the microphone for you to take calls.

The B80s are powered by the QCC3005 chipset and it brings you Bluetooth 5.0+EDR support, A2DP, AVRCP, HFP, HSP, aptX, aptX-LL, and AAC support. Sound is driven by the 10mm Dynamic Driver in each earbud, providing a frequency range from 10Hz to 40kHz.

Finally, from a battery perspective, you have two 60mAh Li-Polymer batteries built into the control box. Those batteries are recharged via the USB-C port built into it. Full charging time takes approximately 1.5 hours and will provide you with up to 8 hours of use. Battery life is impacted by volume levels and if you are making a lot of phone calls.

Ease of Use and Pairing

The pairing process of the EP-B80 earbuds is a painless process. Simple press the multi-function button on the controller until you see a white and green alternating LED. This means that the headset is in pairing mode. Next, go to your iPhone and in Settings under Bluetooth, you will find the EP-B80 listed. Tap it and it will be paired to your iPhone.

Functionally, the earbuds are just as easy to use. On the control box, you have a volume up and volume down key with the multi-function button in the middle. That multi-function button will do different things based on what you are doing on your iPhone. If you are listening to music, the volume up and down buttons do as you would expect: Control the audio volume. If you press them both at the same time and hold for 2 seconds, it will skip to the next track. The multi-function button in music playing allows you to pause music (single press while music is playing), while on a phone call, you can press it to answer a call, hang up a call, or double press it to redial the last number you called. If you have a call coming in, you can double press to reject the call. You can also access Siri by pressing and holding the multi-function button for 2 seconds.

Like most Bluetooth headsets and earbuds, mastering the controls are key to overall satisfaction. In my testing of the B80s, I found them to be straightforward and somewhat intuitive.

Sound Quality & Comfort

Simply put, the sound quality from the EP-B80 earbuds is outstanding. They have an excellent audio range with great, deep bass while not being too “Tinny” in the upper scales. During my testing of the earbuds for this review, I listened to a wide range of music genre ranging from Industrial Metal (Rammstein) to Rock (Rush & Emigrate), EDM (The Crystal Method, Chemical Brothers, and deadmau5) , Pop (Borns and Lady Gaga), and Jazz/New Age (Blue Stone, Enigma, and Enya). Across all genre, the B80s performed excellent. The only challenge I found was with EDM, generally because the tonal range is so dramatic in most of the music. I did find that it was a bit Tinny there but nothing that was horrible, especially for earbuds at this price point.

That great sound quality is made all-the-better with the comfort of the B80s. Wearing these earbuds for long periods of time was not an issue in my reviewing of them, mostly thanks to the customizable ear tips that come with them. I found the foam tips to be the most comfortable for me but your mileage will vary.

Battery Life

As with any Bluetooth earbuds or headphones, battery life is a critical factor in your consideration for purchase. AUKEY advertises that the EP-B80 will get 8 hours of battery life and that is largely dependent on how high you have the volume. In my testing, with the volume set just below mid-level, I was able to achieve nearly seven hours of battery life (6:57 to be exact). The test was conducted repeating an album in Apple Music streaming to my iPhone over the course of the day. That to me is a pretty solid result and shows that AUKEY did their own testing with only slightly lower volume settings. In other words, it is more real world than other earbud or headphone manufactures.

Realistically, nearly 7 hours of battery life should cover most reader’s needs. That is a hella long gym session but also covers you for a trans-con flight across the US and the majority of a flight from the US to London.

Conclusion & Recommendation

Having had the opportunity to use the EP-B80 earbuds from AUKEY, I am nothing short of impressed. They are extremely comfortable to wear for extended periods of time, have excellent sound quality, and battery life is great. It is hard to find much wrong with them to be honest and I have no hesitation in recommending them for those of you who are looking for a solid pair of earbuds.
