Apple introduced the Lightning Connector on the iPhone and iPad back in 2012 and while most accessory manufactures quickly jumped on board, Square did not. The company firmly stuck with their 3.5mm card reader for merchants to swipe credit cards. That, thankfully is now changing.
The company has just announced that a Lightning Connector Card Reader is now available for purchase on their site. It is free for new merchants while existing customers with Square accounts can pick it up for a mere $10.
Why it took so long for the payment company to sort this out is a bit of a mystery. Apple, as well as other phone manufactures, are rapidly pulling the 3.5mm audio port from their phones. Apple began doing this two years ago with the iPhone 7 series. What that meant was that, if a Reader from the company, user wanted to continue to use it on their new iPhone 7, 8, or X, they would have to carry around the Lightning-to-3.5mm dongle. Those days, thankfully, should be over.
For those who are looking for an inexpensive way to accept credit cards at their business, Square is a great option. The app is free in the App Store and the company charges 2.75% for each credit card swipe you make with their service.
