Summary

From a style and performance perspective, it is hard to go wrong with the Satechi USB-C hub.  It looks great when connected to your MacBook and the performance from the hub is second-to-none.  Plus you have a durable design, with a casing made of aluminum (which matches your MacBook) that makes this device worry free when throwing it into your backpack or handbag to take on the road.  Simply put, it is a great accessory that I highly recommend.

When it comes to USB-C hubs for your MacBook, there are plenty to chose from out on the market.  One of the best and certainly one of the most stylish comes from Satechi.  The San Diego, California based company makes a wide range of accessories for Macs, iPhones and iPads, all of which have a touch of style while giving great performance.

The Satechi USB-C pass through hub is a great example of this functionality-meets-style.  Designed to precisely fit in the USB-C port of your MacBook, the hub sits next to your MacBook, almost as if it were a built-in extension.  It provides pass through power of course but also gives you a wide range of ports for SD cards, MicroSD cards, and two USB-A ports that support USB 3.0 speeds.  Top it off with Satechi making these hubs available in all the colors that Apple offers on the MacBook, you have an accessory that truly looks like it belongs with your 12-inch laptop.

I recently picked up one of these hubs to use at home on my MacBook.  After using it for a few weeks, it is a hub that I recommend for its clean design and excellent performance.

Specifications & Design

The Satechi hub measures a petite 3.31″ x 1.06″ x 0.3″ and weighs just 0.88 ounces.  It, like the MacBook itself, is aimed to be compact but functional.  On the back long side of the hub is where you will find the USB-C connector that plugs into your MacBook’s USB-C port.  Satechi designed this hub to plug in tightly to the port, with there being virtually no gap between it and your MacBook when it is plugged in.  It doesn’t look like a third-party accessory but rather a custom built accessory from Apple themselves.

On the opposite side of the hub is where you will find the various ports.  There are two USB-A ports that support the USB 3.0 standard. That means that you can get up to 5Gbps of throughput on each of these ports.  Next you the standard SD card reader and the MicroSD card reader stacked on top of each other in the middle of the hub.  Satechi notes that only one of these can be used at the same time.

Finally, there is the USB-C pass-through port.  This port allows for your MacBook to be charged while using the hub, a big benefit considering the laptop only has one USB-C port.  You can also connect USB-C accessories through this port too.

All of this is in an all aluminum chassis and case that means the hub will be durable and long lasting.  Satechi has designed this hub to be available in the four colors that the MacBook itself is available in so you can have an exact match.  Those colors, as a reminder, are Silver, Space Grey, Gold, and Rose Gold.

Use and Performance

Satechi designed the USB Hub for the MacBook to fit it with precision.  To use it, just plug the UCB-C connector into the port on your MacBook and push it in to where the hub rests right next to your MacBook’s chassis.  You will know that you have successfully connected when you see the small blue LED light on the top of the hub.  You can see this in the photo above. Next, connect your USB-C power connector to the port on the hub to allow for pass-through charging of your MacBook.

From there, you are ready to go.  You can then insert a flash drive into one of the USB ports, or one of the SD card reader slots… or both.  You can use both USB ports at the same time and you can use one of the SD card readers at a time.  That means you can have up to three external devices in the hub working and accessible from your MacBook at the same time.

From a performance perspective, you won’t be disappointed.  All of the ports on the Satechi hub are designed to give you maximum throughput for performance.  Indeed, I was able to watch a video from a USB flash drive without any skipping or issues with playback.  This, of course, does depend on the flash drive itself to an extent but this hub won’t be part of any slow downs you experience.

Conclusion & Recommendation

From a style and performance perspective, it is hard to go wrong with the Satechi USB-C hub.  It looks great when connected to your MacBook and the performance from the hub is second-to-none.  Plus you have a durable design, with a casing made of aluminum (which matches your MacBook) that makes this device worry free when throwing it into your backpack or handbag to take on the road.  Simply put, it is a great accessory that I highly recommend.

While this review focused on the USB-C hub for the 2015-2017 MacBook, Satechi makes this same hub for the MacBook Pro and other accessories for all MacBooks, iMacs, Apple Watch, an iPhones.
