T-Mobile has become the third US carrier to offer support for the iPhone XS and iPhone XR eSIM. Support comes through a new app and only supports prepaid accounts on the carrier. The app itself is a free download and users can use it to sign up for a prepaid account on the built-in eSIM.
Support from T-Mobile comes a couple of weeks after AT&T and Verizon began supporting the feature. Both of those carriers gained support after the iOS 12.1.1 update was released from Apple. The app will work for non-customers as well as customers of the “uncarrier”, allowing their own customers to sign up for a second number.
The carrier is offering three different tiers of eSIM support
- T-Mobile ONE Prepaid with unlimited voice, text, and data for $70 – Expires every 30 days
- Simply Prepaid with unlimited voice, text, and 10GB of LTE data for $40 – Expires every 30 days
- Tourist Plan with 1000 minutes, unlimited text, and 2GB of LTE data for $30 – Expires every 30 days
While the carrier is only offering prepaid eSIM support currently, they do have plans to support post-paid accounts at some point in the future. They, like the other carriers, are limiting it to prepaid to make sure their own systems on the backend are working properly and, frankly, to see how much uptake there is in the feature. Dual SIMs and eSIMs are popular in other parts of the world but are still relatively new here in the United States.
