Tumblr for iOS Pulled Over Child Porn Concerns

Over the weekend, the social networking app Tumblr was removed from the App Store.  It was unexpected and it was assumed at the time that there was a technical issue with the app that caused its removal.  Indeed, even Tumblr said it was working to resolve the issue.  It turns out, it was far worse than a technical problem.

When an update was provided to Apple for approval late last week, Apple denied the update and removed the app from the App Store. That is because suspected child pornography was found on the site.  The news broke on the issue after Download.com reached out to Tumblr and got the details.

Tumblr, like other social networks, wash posts through filters against child pornography.  That database of known child porn content is an industry database that many companies use.  Apparently, the content in question was not in the database yet, thus it pass through these filters.  Tumblr indicates that the content in question has been removed after an audit found the questionable content was not in the database.

Tumblr has and still does allow for porn posts and that, at least for now has not changed.  The social networking platform in recent years has made it increasingly difficult to find that content as they have wanted to protect minors against it.

There is no word on when the Tumblr app will return to the App Store.  Tumblr has indicated they are working closely with Apple to resolve the situation.
