Apple has confirmed through store specific posts that two Apple Store locations in North Texas will be closing. The two locations, located in Plano and Frisco, will be consolidated into a new location that will be opening up in the Dallas Galleria in North Dallas.
Both the Willowbend Mall location in Plano, Texas, as well as the Stonebriar Mall location in Frisco will be closing on April 12, 2019. The closures are permanent and staff from those stores will be moved to the new Galleria location. That location is currently under construction. The Willowbend location opened in 2001 (It was my go-to Apple Store when I lived in Dallas) while the Stonebriar location opened in 2009.
The closure of these two locations is in large part due to the endless barrage of patent suits that Apple is charged with each year. Both the Plano and Frisco locations are in the Eastern District of Texas, a haven for patent trolls to file suits against the company. By closing these locations and moving them out of the court’s district, litigation by patent trolls will be considerably more difficult.
There is no official word on when the new Galleria location will open but it will be located on the first floor of the three story atrium style upscale shopping center.
